The Objects of The Royal Commonwealth Society
(formerly The Royal Empire Society founded as The Royal Colonial Institute, 1868)
"The objects of the Society are to promote the increase and diffusion of knowledge respecting the peoples and countries of the Commonwealth; to maintain the best traditions of the Commonwealth; and to foster unity of thought and action in relation to matters of common interest."
These objects shall be pursued by the Society, working as a non-sectarian and non-party organisation, by the following methods:
- Providing a central meeting-place in London, and meeting-rooms in Commonwealth countries and elsewhere.
- Maintaining libraries and newspaper rooms.
- Holding meetings in Commonwealth countries and elsewhere for the discussion of subjects of Commonwealth interest and providing for visitors from overseas to give expression of their views.
- Producing and publishing journals and other publications.
- Encouraging the study of geography, ethnology, history, literature, art and natural resources of Commonwealth countries, especially in universities and schools, by providing lectures and prizes for essays.
- Maintaining information services.
- Promoting the comparative study of the ways of life in Commonwealth countries and encouraging interchange of ideas.
- Providing facilities for the study of foreign countries as far as this may be of interest to the peoples of the Commonwealth.
- Encouraging the formation of Branches of the Society in Commonwealth countries and elsewhere.
- Encouraging mutual interest in Commonwealth countries among young people.
- Supporting other organisations with similar objects.
- Using any other method proper to the carrying out of the Objects of the Society.
